LinkedIn Insight Tag not working

- Brad Raimer, founder

On a website, LinkedIn measures conversions with its Insight Tag, or with an image pixel for some setups. When Campaign Manager shows no conversions, the cause is either the tag itself or the conversion built on top of it, and LinkedIn reports on each separately. Check them in that order: a conversion cannot work until the tag does.

Read the tag's source status

In Campaign Manager, open Measure, then Signals manager, then Insight Tag. The source status there says when LinkedIn last heard from the tag. Active means a signal arrived in the past seven days. No recent activity means the last one is older than that. Unverified means LinkedIn has never received a signal at all.

Unverified on a brand-new tag can simply mean nobody has visited yet. LinkedIn suggests visiting the page with the tag yourself and allowing up to 24 hours for the status to turn Active.

When the tag stays Unverified

LinkedIn's own troubleshooting list starts with how the code was copied: a tag installed by hand must include the full code, with straight quotation marks rather than curly ones. After 24 hours, it asks you to check that the tag's container is set up, that the tag sits on your own pages, that nobody edited LinkedIn's JavaScript, that the partner ID matches your account, and that LinkedIn's IP ranges and domains are not blocked.

A site with a Content Security Policy only loads scripts from sources the policy allows, as MDN's guide to CSP explains, so a policy that leaves out LinkedIn's domains blocks the tag in the browser.

Placement matters too. LinkedIn's developer documentation says to paste the tag in the site's global footer, just above the closing body tag, so it runs on every page, and notes that each ad account has only one Insight Tag.

When the tag is Active and the conversion is not

A conversion can stay Unverified, No recent activity, or Inactive while the tag reports Active. LinkedIn's conversion troubleshooting matches each setup to its usual fault. A manual setup fails when the tag in the account differs from the tag on the page. A page-load conversion fails when the page's address does not match the URL rule set for it. An image pixel fails when it was installed to fire on a click instead of when the page loads. A tag added through a tag manager fails when the tag manager's own setup went wrong.

LinkedIn also asks that the tag stay off pages that collect or contain sensitive data, such as pages where people manage medical appointments or financial accounts.

To check a page from outside, the FlowPilots free scan reads one public page the way a browser does: which analytics and ad tags it is set up to load, and whether its own headers let them run. It needs no account and nothing installed on the site, and what it cannot observe is named rather than guessed.
